the pastor’s heart
Recently, I took the Chapel lessons for St Andrew’s Sec School and I posed a question to the classes I took, I asked the boys: “Do you have any Vision / Goal in life?” The response was astonishing – silence from most of the classes; not many of them had ever thought through what they want in life or what is the goal they want to have for life! Most of the students just live day by day, some do not even know what they are doing in school.
I suspect this could be a world-wide phenomenon on this generation as they plunge forward to catch up with all the expectations and technological advancements of this age. Results oriented, overwhelmed by the media and technology, they live in the ‘NOW’, immersing in the culture of ‘Consumerism’. Not many may think through and reflect about the future, their own future.
I think this can be the same if we Christians are not careful in our journey in this world. Very easily we lose our calling God has placed in our lives.
In the Bible,
Proverbs 29:18 (AMP) :
“Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man]--blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he.”
It says that the Law of God is the solid pillar of standard to follow, and that through understanding the beauty of the Law and receiving revelations from God about the Law and obeying it, the follower will be blessed, joyful and happy. Through the revelations and understanding from the Lord about His Law, there is vision. There is a goal in life. Without it, the people simply ‘perish’ because there is no direction, no control about what is good and evil and they perish in their self depravity. Another version of this Scripture is this:
Proverbs 29:18 (NKJV) :
“Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; But happy is he who keeps the law.”
‘Where there is no vision, the people perish’, its so true isn’t it? There is no restraint, no goal, no objective in life. Anything goes. There is no direction. There is no focus.
The crucial question to us as Christians is this: So what is the vision of our lives?
Our dear Lord Jesus have already answered that question through,
Matthew 22:37 – 40 (NKJV) :
“Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” ”
That is the vision of our lives! To know Jesus and to make Him known! To walk in obedience and to shine for Him! Jesus did not just simply talk about it. He ‘walked the talk’! He is asking us to ‘walk the talk’ as well! In church we are disciple to follow Jesus, in our own QT we draw nearer to Jesus through our prayers with Him and the studying of His Word, in our conversations we talk about Him with our fellow brothers & sisters in Christ! The Law (Bible) is expounded and unfolding before us as we embark on this journey in seeking Him….However, it is also crucial that we go out there into our sphere of influence to ‘make Him known’ as well!
In this year 2010, the theme for POINT Community is “1 + 2 = 60”. It’s not a weird mathematical equation. Currently, we have approximately on average 20 – 25 regular comers to our fellowship. If everyone were to ‘roll up their sleeves’, do what Jesus has called us to do, sharing our lives with two other friends and sharing with them the Gospel, when God opens the opportunity to bring them to church then the number 60 will come into reality! Our friends are our ‘neighbours’, our classmates are our ‘neighbours’, our pre-believing love ones are our ‘neighbours’!
The Youth Leadership prayed and seek God for this vision for 2010! I’ve said this before, we are not into the ‘numbers game’ but it is through opportunities & sharing like this that you know that God can use you to impact someone else’ life! It is a vision that POINT Community should converge towards!
There is definitely meaning in the 2010 Theme. If you are experiencing the gift of eternal life, should you not share it with others who need it as well?
