the pastor’s heart
I remember when I was younger, I was always happy to see my money in the bank earn interest. Mum always showed me the bankbook to encourage me and I developed a habit of saving regularly. It’s nice to see the interest growing in the bank! It’s so intriguing! Mum told me that when I grow older, all the money saved since my youth will be given to me to be managed. I was always thrilled to hear that. I can buy my own stuff or even manage it further for my future. Mum always emphasized the value of being moneywise.
Jesus spoke about ‘The Parable of the Talents’ in Matthew 25:14-30. The parable talks about a certain businessman who was about to go on a long journey to another country. He called his 3 stewards so that he could pass his money to them to invest. He gave each according to their ability to invest and went on his journey. All but one steward invested and obtained profits from the investments. The one and only steward whom did not have any profits yielded from the talent that he was given, actually just buried the money in the ground. He was not a good steward and was not responsible for the talent that was tasked to him.
The lord (the businessman) came back and was joyful with the two who made the profit and was very angry with the unprofitable lazy one. In fact, he welcomed the profitable two into his embrace and joy but cast out the lazy one into ‘outer darkness’ where ‘there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth’ (Matt 25:30).
The parable serves as a reminder to us about being good stewards of what God has given us in this lifetime in our Christian walk. Whether it is a talent, a gift, a ministry or even our own lives. In Matt 25:14, ‘the lord went on a long journey’ is liken to Jesus, whom having given His last instructions to the disciples, ascended back to heaven. He will be coming back the 2nd time to judge the living and the dead (1 Peter 4:5), and at that point in time, we each have to give our accounts to Him, on how have we been stewards to what God has entrusted us.
Will we be like the two profitable stewards or the lazy steward? The good news for now is that we can still make that choice to be like the profitable ones (if we have not been one :P ).
God is in the ‘business’ of expanding His kingdom. If He so decides that there is no need to expand his kingdom anymore, it means all those who do not know Jesus right now have no chance of entering into eternal life, and that is not the case! The reason why God is in the ‘business’ of expanding His kingdom is because in the beginning of creation, all of mankind should be with him in perfect relationship and love, but because of sin, spiritual death came upon humanity, and the quest to bring us back to that perfect relationship starts. God desires all to be saved (1 Tim 2:4). Up until today the quest continues. God has entrusted us with the quest – to go forth and ‘make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things’ that Jesus have commanded (Matt 28:19-20).
POINT Community has come a long way and we will be a youth fellowship that is always forward moving! We need to grow further not just in terms of spiritual maturity but also in terms of fellowship size because we want people who do not know Jesus to join us and to learn more about God together!
Are we good stewards of POINT Community, which God has placed in our hands to manage? Will we make right choices so that God can be glorified? Will we go forth to tell people about Jesus through our lifestyles, friendships and relationships? Can we embrace new friends who are going to join us and extend our hospitality to them? YES WE CAN. We will and we will do it together – you and I!
As the year 2009 draws to a close, open up the perspectives of your Christian walk. Embrace an evangelistic lifestyle. Engage the culture of today’s youth generation. Tell them about Jesus when God opens the door of opportunity.
Remember the seeds we planted on 4th October 2009? The seeds are growing into saplings and eventually will grow into a strong plant! We want to take care of POINT Community, just like how we care for this young plant. Let’s do it together.
"His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ " - Matthew 25:21
"I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase." -1 Cor 3:6-7
Let us be good stewards and faithful to POINT Community, which has been entrusted to us. Someone will plant, someone else will water but ultimately it is God who causes the growth. Let’s do our part, our best and leave the rest to God!
It’s time to invest our talents and see the profits. Let’s go tell the world about Jesus :)

Being good stewards
"His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ "
- Matthew 25:21
